Ambleside - in the heart of the Lake District National Park with all the amenities you need
To many people, Ambleside is Lakeland's favourite town and a good way to explore it is to follow the Town Trail heritage walk. A visit to Ambleside's new Armitt Museum and Library is also a most rewarding experience, with an Ambleside section and displays to illustrate the lives of the district's most notable local residents including Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin.

The town has information centres at Market Cross and Waterhead to help you choose where to go and what to do.In addition to gentle strolls or more strenuous mountain walking, there are bike hire centres, daily minibus tours and lake cruises on Windermere throughout the year which leave from Waterhead, a level walk of about a mile from Ambleside. Ambleside is centrally situated so that you can visit anywhere in the Lake District comfortably within a day.
Although Ambleside is a small town, it has an amazing choice of specialist shops, which makes shopping an entertainment in itself! Local artisans make everything from woolly rugs to Ruskin lace, picture frames, or fine hand-blown glass and there are both traditional and contemporary art and crafts shops and galleries. Market day is Wednesday. Not surprisingly, Ambleside leads the field in outdoor clothing. The wealth of outdoor shops is supported by the expertise of outdoor-loving staff who will give you the benefit of their personal recommendations.
Local pubs are friendly and hospitable, and eating out offers enormous choice, whether in tearooms and cafes, or in restaurants offering English, Chinese, Thai, Indian or Italian cooking. Visitors don't need to head out of Ambleside to find good entertainment! Ambleside has a 4-screen cinema, live drama twice yearly, art exhibitions, changing museum displays and numerous concerts. The ancient and picturesque procession which re-enacts the Parish Church's 16th century Rushbearing festival and sports takes place in early July; there are spring and summer flower and produce shows, and Ambleside lights up in winter with a lantern procession to mark the switching on of the festive lights, and to welcome Christmas shoppers with some seasonal cheer.
